Running in Race For The Cure

This Sunday in Portland the Race For The Cure is being held. It’s an event to support Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists.

I’m a last minute entry but looking to do what I can. Thought I had more time but I don’t.

If anyone would like to sponsor me, all proceeds go to support breast cancer research and education, along with mammograms for people in need that live in Oregon and SW Washington.

More than sponsoring me, I would encourage you all to find a race in your local area (if you’re in the US) and run yourself. It’s about taking individual action, spreading awareness and getting involved. The run is only 3.1 miles, they even have kids run in the race, so families are a go and if you’re worried you’ll look bad… you know you can at least out-run a 6 year old. :)

Don’t have to do it for the competition, do it for something fun and good.

I haven’t run competively in a long time, so while I’m looking forward to seeing how I do, I expect there’s a chance I’ll be dragging myself across the line. The point is, if I can do it, so can you.

Yes, I know there are so many things out there, how do you know where to put your time and energy? Only you can decide. I’d just like to encourage people to do something, whatever you choose to do. I know we can’t do it all. The best you can is good enough, as long as that’s what you’re doing.

For me, many of the strong influences and good, lasting memories of my life have been given to me from women. No, I don’t just mean relationships. So even when you frustrate me and I blame it on your gender (I’m kidding) I want all of you (women) to live long, happy lives. This is just my way of saying thanks. You gave me more than I can return, you need something back.

If you don’t want to run yourself and would like to sponsor me here’s my link:

Even though the race is Sunday Sept. 23rd, I have until October 23rd to continue fundraising. It’s for a good cause, if you want to pitch in, I appreciate it. But, I’d rather see you run!

I’ll talk more about how I did after the race.

Take care,
Eric

Your intent to actively contribute to the cause by running is admirable, Eric! The Susan B. Komen Foundation is doing so much for women who are fighting for their lives, and more yet by helping to screen those who are unable to pay. As active volunteers at the Race for the Cure in Orange County, CA, which is held each September at the Newport Beach Fashion Island, the members of my service club, Zonta International, are part of the vision of “A World Without Breast Cancer”. Those in good physical shape run (or walk) the 5-mile course in memory of too many friends who have lost their battle. The others check in runners, distribute water and help with the administrative part of the race. It’s just our small way of doing hands-on service. Knowing that men embrace the cause is great! You’re a good guy, Eric, and you’ll get a lot out of this spiritually.
Love,
Marianne :)
